PARIS, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- French government spokesperson Sibeth Ndiaye on Monday said that a new extension to the United Kingdom's (UK) departure from the European Union (EU) was "in nobody's interest," calling on the British to come up with a clear statement on how they plan to quit the EU.

"There is an accord that has been negotiated for a long time. Recently, a number of blocking points were put back to the discussion ... and that was a considerable effort on the part of the European Union," Ndiaye said.

"It is now up to the British Parliament to say what it thinks. It is no longer (up to) the European Union. We need a vote that is on the merits and not delaying tactics to save time," she said after the weekly meeting of the French cabinet.

Ndiaye stressed that the UK should "give a clear answer" on whether it supports the Brexit agreement or opposes it.

"Once we have a clear answer to a question which, I admit, is not quite simple but which, nevertheless, has been the subject of more than two years of negotiations, we can then determine what will be our attitude," she said.

Britons voted to leave the EU in a 2016 referendum. Their departure was initially scheduled for March 29, 2019.
