TOKYO, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Friday as the yens ongoing retreat against the U.S. dollar brightened market sentiment and helped lift exporter issues higher.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 51.25 points, or 0.22 percent, from Thursday to 22,889.62.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 1.70 points, or 0.09 percent, to 1,810.07.

Oil and coal product, mining, and rubber product-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
